Being a student athlete isn’t just about showing up to practice and competing on game day, it’s about discipline, resilience, and learning how to grow both on and off the court. For Eban Stahl, a dedicated tennis player, that journey has been filled with challenges, setbacks, and a strong determination to keep pushing forward.
Eban first picked up a tennis racket in sixth grade. What started as a simple decision to try out for the school’s team (especially since it was the first time one was offered) quickly became something more meaningful. With his dad already involved in the sport, tennis felt like a natural fit. That early exposure sparked an interest that would grow into a serious commitment.
This past season, however, tested Eban in ways he didn’t expect. After suffering a serious elbow injury on December 20th, his progress came to a sudden halt. The injury not only affected him physically, causing him to lose muscle and strength, but also took a toll mentally. Being unable to play left him feeling discouraged and disconnected from the sport he loved.
“Not being able to do anything was really hard,” he reflects. “I lost a lot of confidence.”
But what sets Eban apart is how he responded. Instead of giving up, he used that difficult period as motivation. His goal was simple but powerful, to get back on the court and prove people wrong. That mindset helped him stay focused during recovery and fueled his return to the game.
One of the biggest challenges he faced this season wasn’t just physical, it was mental. Rebuilding confidence after an injury can be just as tough as healing physically. Eban worked hard to strengthen his mental game, especially when preparing for matches. Staying calm, focused, and positive became key parts of his routine.
Like many athletes, Eban has developed small rituals to help him get into the right mindset before competing. He wears a lucky sleeve (something he started using during his first match back). That habit may seem small, but it gives him a sense of control and confidence.
Balancing school and sports is another major part of being a student athlete. Between practices, matches, and assignments, time management is essential. Eban handles this by staying organized and focused, making sure he keeps up with his responsibilities in the classroom while still giving his all on the court.
Throughout his journey, one person has stood out as his biggest supporter, which is his dad. Always present, always pushing him to improve, his dad has played a major role in shaping Eban’s work ethic. Whether offering criticism or motivation, he’s been a constant source of support.
“If it wasn’t for him, I wouldn’t be here playing,” Eban says.
Despite the intensity of competition, Eban keeps his love for the game at the center of everything he does. He’s driven by the desire to improve every day, to win, and to represent his school with pride. While losing is never easy, he’s learned how to handle it with maturity. When losses are tough, he focuses on what went wrong and how to improve. In close matches, he chooses to reflect on what he did well and appreciates the opportunity to compete.
Eban Stahl’s story is one of perseverance. Through injury, setbacks, and the everyday challenges of being a student-athlete, he continues to push forward. For him, tennis is more than just a sport, it’s a passion, a challenge, and a way to prove to himself that no obstacle is too big to overcome.
