For most freshmen, the transition to high school athletics is about adjusting to a faster pace and learning from older teammates. However, for freshman Mason Grivna the season has looked a little different. Standing at an impressive 6’11”, Grivna has already secured a starting spot on Ballard’s varsity basketball team which is a rare honor for most freshmen. What’s even more impressive, his coach nominated him for Athlete of the Month over several upperclassmen, a testament to both his performance and his presence on the team. Despite being one of the youngest players on the roster, Grivna has proven that he belongs on the varsity team.

Grivna’s passion for basketball started long before he stepped onto Ballard’s court. He credits much of his inspiration to his mother, who played basketball in college. Watching her love for the game helped spark his own, and that influence continues to motivate him today.
Throughout the season, Grivna has demonstrated both skill and dedication, earning a spot on the All-Region First Team, which is an impressive recognition, especially for a freshman competing against older and more experienced players. But for Grivna, individual recognition is never the main focus. “Being a good teammate is one of my primary goals, because if you’re a good teammate, they will lift you up in the same way. And you really need that, you know,” Grivna said. His mindset reflects the leadership and maturity that has helped him succeed early in his high school career. Both teammates and coaches note that he works hard, listens to feedback, and constantly looks for ways to improve his game.

When asked what keeps him motivated, Grivna looks ahead rather than focusing only on the present. He stays driven by thinking about his future in the sport and recognizing how much potential he still has to grow as a player.
Of course, balancing varsity athletics with the demands of freshman year isn’t always easy. Grivna explained that learning how to manage both school and basketball has been one of the biggest challenges so far. To keep up with both, he focuses on prioritizing his responsibilities and avoiding procrastination. Both of these skills that he admits have taken time to develop.
Off the court, Grivna is still experiencing many of the same things as any other freshman: learning the routines of high school, managing coursework, and getting involved in the school community. However, his commitment to both academics and athletics shows a level of discipline that has helped him stand out.

When asked about his reaction to his coach nominating him for Athlete of the Month, Grivna responded confidently and with a bit of humor: “He made the right choice.”
With his combination of talent, work ethic, and team-first mentality, Mason Grivna is already making a name for himself at Ballard. And if his freshman season is any indication, the future looks incredibly bright for this rising basketball star.
