As the results came in for the 2026 Governor’s scholars program, it left a lot of people not satisfied with the results. The governor’s scholars program is very prestigious and I would say hard to get into a 3 week summer program that highlights the “best of the best,” allowing students to showcase their academic success and grow leadership opportunities as they prepare for college. This program in my opinion is one of the best programs from the college eye, it shows leadership capabilities, and qualifies you for 26 different scholarships for colleges in Kentucky.
All of these amenities are what make the program so stress worthy and competitive, especially at Ballard. Many students that apply every year don’t get in, and this causes a lot of academic pressure and anxiety, especially for those that need the money GSP comes with or have high expectations from parents. Even though this is a completely optional program that does no bad if not accepted, the drama we have noticed that comes with GSP every year is extreme. Many of the students I talked to that had extraordinary stats, good attendance, and no behavioral issues still didn’t get in, all all were of minorities or were 1 or 2nd generation Americans. The important takeaway of this to us was that this program doesn’t care about anything other than how you look representing Kentucky and the overall program. One student I talked to was of a minority, female and had an almost perfect SAT score that didn’t get accepted into the program.
One student we interviewed, Rocco Lewis, a student that got into the program and applied to GSP because of the opportunity it provided and, of course, the good scholarships it came with. Rocco also talked about his essay and application process, saying that his essay stood out because “I kept relating back my student profile back to how I grew up, and how I grew from those experiences..” His application process went smoothly, as stated by him, and he thought that he definitely deserved the spot and opportunity the program offered him.
