Dr. Brian Yearwood, superintendent of JCPS, visits Ballard High School to hold a community forum. During the forum, many important concerns were raised including school fights and discipline of students. A recurring topic was shootings near or in the school building. It is a major safety issue that has been debated for years.
A teacher from Coleridge-Taylor elementary school recounted a recent shooting on her school’s property where a civilian lost their life. She spoke about how she witnessed it. “This is coming from all of us,” she says. She represents not the whole of Coleridge-Taylor elementary school but all people going through the same situation
Many of the community members within the forum, composed of mostly parents and teachers share the same opinion, saying that this should not be happening. They don’t believe that their kids are safe in school environments.
Dr Yearwood agreed with them. He promised to come and visit Coleridge-Taylor Elementary school and address these concerns and take action to solve these problems.
When asked about how his first couple months as superintendent went, he said “It just doesn’t feel like enough,” So far he feels positive that he can accomplish what he has come to accomplish. He believes that his first few days were fruitful and that he won’t stop until he does what he came to do.
