The boys basketball team from Ballard High School competed in the regional finals against St. Xavier High School on March 9th at Valley High School. After a hard fought game, Ballard ultimately fell short, ending their postseason run. Even with the loss, the Bruins showed strong effort and determination throughout the game even when ending it with 63-49 on the scoreboard.
The match up was highly anticipated because Ballard had defeated St. Xavier earlier in the season. Many students expected another close game, and the regional final delivered a competitive atmosphere with intense plays from both teams.
Students from Ballard who attended the game shared their thoughts and reactions afterward. Veniya Jackson, a player on Ballard’s girls basketball team, described one of the most exciting moments she witnessed.
“One of the craziest plays I saw was a fast break by Cold Edelen that ended with an unexpected steal and a quick transition into a layup,” Veniya said. “The moment happened very quickly and shifted the momentum of the game for a short time.”

Although the Bruins lost the regional finals, many students still viewed the season as a strong one. Ballard had previously defeated St. Xavier earlier in the season, which showed the team’s ability to compete against tough opponents.
It was disappointing to lose the regional finals, winning the first game earlier in the season showed how strong and capable the team is,” Veniya said. “Losing such an important game can be frustrating, but it also provides motivation to improve and come back stronger next season.”
Another student, Jossy Rosario, also shared a memorable moment from watching the team during the postseason.
“The craziest play I saw was when Mason Grivina dunked on Jordan Jackson’s head during the second half of the finals,” Rosario said. “I feel bad about the loss, but next season they definitely got this.”

Despite the loss, Ballard head coach Greg Willis expressed pride in the team’s effort throughout the season. After winning a district title earlier in the tournament, Willis emphasized how proud he was of the team’s ability to compete physically against strong opponents during their regional run.
While the season ended with a difficult loss, many students and players remain optimistic about the future of Ballard basketball. With continued practice, teamwork, and preparation, the Bruins hope to return even stronger next season and make another deep postseason run.
For now, Ballard fans remain proud of the team’s effort and look forward to what the future holds for Bruins basketball.
