Ballard Between the Lines is set for a phenomenal year in journalism! As an editorial board, we are optimistic about what’s to come and have ambitious plans for the direction of the paper. We hope to create a webpage that is engaging, meaningful, and accurately representative of the interests and concerns of both Ballard students and the broader community.
This year, one of our top priorities for Between the Lines is increasing readership. Our readers shape what stories we choose to cover and the lenses with which we look at certain stories through, so building our readership is something we plan to work at. At the core of journalism, readers are what make the news impactful. So, we ask that anyone interested in the growth of our paper to consistently visit our webpage and start a conversation about Between the Lines.
Excitingly, Between the Lines will be moving to a new website platform this year! Previously, the paper was published through Google Sites, which became difficult to work with when it came to formatting and photos. However, this year we will be publishing through SNO Sites, which is specifically designed for school newspapers. With SNO, we are excited to have a more navigable and professional-looking paper. Also, SNO will give us opportunities to earn awards and recognition through the platform, something we will be working towards this year.
Sports is a large part of Ballard culture and therefore will be heavily featured in Between the Lines. However, this year, we plan to highlight sports at Ballard that are often overlooked and don’t receive the recognition they deserve. Football and basketball will certainly be covered, but expect pieces on all sports—no matter how small the team. There are phenomenal athletes at Ballard in sports we often don’t hear enough about, such as volleyball, tennis, swim team, and golf. Additionally, we plan on giving a spotlight to women’s sports, who likewise are often not talked about enough.
Between the Lines will also be spreading the news through social media. We plan to stay active on Instagram with weekly posts, which you can find @bhsbetweenthelines. On our social media, you can stay updated on Between the Lines issues and general Ballard information. Especially on Instagram, we plan to interact with the student body and tailor our articles to what students express interest in.
Overall, we have exciting plans for Between the Lines this school year and hope that you will continue to follow along and read our paper!
