You may not know Ms. Chancy, she is a new teacher at Ballard. Ms. Chancy is in her first year at Ballard High School, and she says it’s “going well.” She is a trans teacher here at Ballard, and she is very sweet and welcoming. Ms. Chancy is a civics teacher for freshmen. In her youth, she grew up in Louisville, graduated from Manual High School, and attended college at UofL. In the fall of 2023, she started student teaching at Doss High School. Ms. Chancy graduated from UofL this year.
Ms. Chancy is one of the queer minorities at Ballard. She is trans, and her pronouns are she/her. Ms. Chancy was scared that students and staff would treat her differently. “It can be hard at times to be a minority and a teacher,” said Ms. Chancy. She has heard bad stories from minorities at other high schools. But, on the other hand, things can be great, “all of the more veteran teachers have been forthcoming with supporting me, being a first-year teacher,” Ms. Chancy said. Someone who made her feel welcome was Ms. Mayes. The first day Ms. Chancy was at the school, Ms. Mayes said that “if any kid, any parent, gives you a problem, send them my way, and I will get them sorted out.” Luckily, Ms. Chancy hasn’t had any problems besides kids misgendering her. All she does is just correct them and go on with her day.
Ms. Chancy is very passionate about her job. She got inspired to teach when she was a camp counselor at Camp Piomingo, “it opened me up to the idea of working with kids professionally, ” said Ms. Chancy. She wanted to be a civics teacher because there are a lot of kids who don’t understand the political environment. Ms. Chancy wants to give kids an opportunity to learn and get a better understanding of the political environment.” Ms. Chancy loves the pathway system at Ballard, “the pathway system gives kids a lot of choice in the education they receive.” She likes how you can change your pathway, unlike other schools.
Students also have positive feelings about Ms. Chancy. “Ms. Chancy is nice, I always feel welcome in her class,” said Ryleah Lawrence.
Other than Ballard, Ms. Chancy loves to go to concerts. Her favorite music artist is Briston Maroney. She also loves to go to parks around the Louisville area. “I’m always around Louisville’s parks.” She also loves to craft and collage with her girlfriend. The best advice she gave me was, “You get out things that you put in.” Ms. Chancy is located in room N135.
